The ancient Greeks believed that fire was given to the humankind by " Prometheus " and considered to have a sacred qualities.
" Mirrors " were used to focus the sun rays  to ignite flames that would burn perpetually in front of the Greek Temples. The Olympic flame began in 1936 in Berlin games. 3,300 runners brought the torch with flames.
Today, the Olympic flame is lit in front of ruins of the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece.

Host country: Athens, Greece

First torch lighter: Kostas Gatsioudis-  Silver medallist in Running.

Last torch lighter: Nicolas Kaklamanakis- Silver medallist in Sailing.

Meaning of the torch design:  The country was inspired by an Olive Leaf. The design was selected to enhance the flame with its upward dynamic shape. Its ergonomic curved design establish the torch as the continuation of the flame, which in turn rises as a continuation of the torch bearers hand. It is made of metal (magnesium) and wood (Olive tree.) It also represents the fire seemed to come straight from the torchbearers hand.
